Nigerian social commentator and public affairs advocate, Scott Iguma, has raised serious concerns over public safety in Lagos State after witnessing multiple lifeless bodies lying on major highways within a short period. His disturbing observation has reignited conversations around road safety, surveillance, and accountability in Nigeria’s most populous city.

According to Iguma, the recurring sight of bodies on busy Lagos roads is not only tragic but deeply alarming. He questioned how such incidents continue to occur without clear explanations, stressing that the absence of functional surveillance infrastructure makes it almost impossible to determine what truly happens on these highways.

Describing the situation as “alarming,” he noted that many of the deaths are likely linked to hit-and-run accidents, reckless driving, or other criminal activities that often go unpunished.

Iguma emphasized that without CCTV cameras installed on major roads, authorities are left to rely on speculation rather than evidence. He explained that this gap allows offenders to escape justice while families of victims are denied closure. According to him, proper surveillance would make it easier to track vehicles involved in accidents, identify reckless drivers, and support thorough investigations into road-related deaths.

The commentator further stated that CCTV technology is no longer a luxury but a “basic public safety necessity,” especially in a mega city like Lagos where traffic congestion, commercial transport activities, and pedestrian movement are constant. He argued that many global cities already depend heavily on road surveillance systems to deter crime, improve emergency response, and enhance accountability among road users.

Iguma also expressed concern over the broader implication of neglecting road safety infrastructure, warning that the continuous loss of lives could become normalized if urgent steps are not taken. He urged the Lagos State Government to prioritize the installation of functional CCTV cameras across highways, bridges, and other high-risk areas, noting that such an initiative would save lives and restore public confidence.

His call has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns and demanding stronger safety measures. For residents who encounter these tragic scenes daily, Iguma’s message serves as a wake-up call that urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life.
