Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has found himself at the center of a serious online controversy following accusations that he diverted part of a ₦20 million ransom intended for the release of kidnapped victims.
The claims were made by an X (formerly Twitter) user identified as @Abdulganiyu0se1, who alleged that the activist received ₦20 million plus an additional ₦50,000 to help secure the release of his sister and her husband from abductors. According to the user, a portion of this ransom money was allegedly misappropriated by Gwamnishu.
The allegation quickly spread across social media platforms, generating debates and raising concerns about transparency in cases involving ransom negotiations and rescue missions. With the matter gaining traction online, Gwamnishu took to Facebook to address the claims in a lengthy post, insisting that the accusations were false and misrepresentative of the real situation.
In his statement, Gwamnishu explained that his earlier silence was intentional and born out of concern for the safety of the remaining victim still held by kidnappers. He wrote:
"The only reason I am staying silent is because of the safety of the man still in captivity. But since the family who are supposed to protect their brother are accusing me falsely, is it not better I drop all that happened including our initial plans for posterity sake."
The activist further urged investigative journalists to take up the matter and uncover the full story, stressing that the incident involved sensitive details not yet made public. He also disclosed that officials of the Edo State Government were already aware of the situation and had some insight into what transpired.
Gwamnishu maintained his innocence and suggested that a comprehensive investigation would reveal the truth, urging the public to withhold judgment until verified facts emerge. The incident continues to stir reactions online as Nigerians call for clarity, accountability, and transparency in cases involving ransom payments and rescue efforts.
