Afrobeat singer and social commentator Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti, widely known as Seun Kuti, has shared a deeply emotional account of a family that allegedly lost a loved one after placing total reliance on spiritual intervention instead of medical treatment.

In a video that has since circulated online, Seun narrated the experience of an unnamed Nigerian family whose relative was diagnosed with cancer. According to him, medical professionals had reportedly informed the family that the illness had reached an advanced stage and that there was little more science could do beyond keeping the patient comfortable.

Despite the grim prognosis, Seun claimed the family refused to accept the medical verdict and instead turned to faith in the hope of a miracle.

“Oyibo don tell am say nothing can be done, get comfortable; it’s your time. But the woman no wan d!e na. She was a Nigerian rich woman. She too hold bar. Na him dey come Nigeria, Adeboye will heal her. Dem go collect place for Redeem Camp. Adeboye pray finish… the woman come d!e inside Redeem Camp, the woman’s family couldn’t believe it,” Seun stated.

According to the singer, the woman, described as wealthy and influential, travelled back to Nigeria after seeking spiritual healing abroad. Her family reportedly secured accommodation at a religious camp, believing prayers would restore her health. However, instead of the expected miracle, she allegedly passed away during her stay at the camp.

Seun further alleged that the family struggled to come to terms with the loss, especially after investing large sums of money in the pursuit of spiritual healing. He claimed that the head pastor of the church assured them that the woman would be revived, giving them renewed hope even after her death.

“Na him dey carry her body go inside Adeboye place for Redeem Camp. This was after $250,000 don go down. Adeboye came out of his balcony, he didn’t even come down to meet them. He told them to stop crying. He will go inside to pray for her to wake up. As he pray for one hour she no wake up, e say na God call am, make them dey go house,” Seun added.

The musician explained that the family was left devastated, not only by the loss of their loved one but also by the emotional and financial toll of the entire ordeal. According to him, the experience shattered their faith and left them struggling to process what had happened.

Seun used the story to caution Nigerians against completely abandoning medical advice in favour of spiritual solutions, especially in critical health situations. While acknowledging the role of faith in people’s lives, he stressed that ignoring professional medical care could have irreversible consequences.

The account has since sparked intense debate online, with some supporting Seun’s call for balance between faith and science, while others criticised his remarks as an attack on religious institutions. Many users, however, agreed that the story underscores the dangers of delaying or rejecting medical treatment in life-threatening conditions.

Although the identities of the family and the patient were not disclosed, the narrative has reignited conversations about healthcare, belief systems, and the difficult choices families face when dealing with terminal illnesses.

Seun Kuti has consistently been outspoken about social issues, and this latest account adds to his ongoing criticism of practices he believes exploit vulnerable people during moments of desperation.
