President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has publicly addressed the tragic road accident involving Nigerian-born boxing champion Anthony Joshua, popularly known as AJ, which claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the President revealed that he personally reached out to the heavyweight boxer following the heartbreaking incident to offer his condolences and prayers. According to Tinubu, the phone conversation was aimed at expressing sympathy over the painful loss and reassuring Joshua of the nation’s support during this difficult period.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the de@th of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him,” the President stated.
President Tinubu further disclosed that Anthony Joshua assured him that he was in stable condition and receiving top-level medical care at the hospital where he was admitted following the accident.
“He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” Tinubu added.
Demonstrating deep concern beyond the boxer himself, the President also reached out to Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort as the family mourns the tragic loss.
“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her,” the statement read.
In addition, President Tinubu confirmed that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was physically present at the hospital attending to the situation firsthand. The President commended the Governor’s swift response and commitment to ensuring Joshua’s wellbeing.
“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” Tinubu said.
The accident, which has sparked widespread concern across Nigeria and beyond, has continued to draw reactions from fans, celebrities, sports figures, and political leaders.
