The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) has announced the immediate suspension of its National President, Pretty Okafor, following an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC).

The decision was contained in a communiqué dated December 25, 2025, issued after the NEC reviewed what it described as urgent leadership and governance issues affecting the organisation.

To avoid a leadership vacuum, the Council appointed the Governor of PMAN’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, Mr. Sydney Sparrow, as Acting National President pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

According to the communiqué, Okafor’s suspension takes effect immediately and will remain in place until a full investigative and disciplinary process is concluded.

The NEC stated that the action was taken over what it termed “persistent violations of the PMAN constitution, abuse of office, disregard for due process, and actions capable of damaging the welfare, integrity and credibility of the association.”

One of the key allegations raised against the suspended president involves the unilateral appointment of national officers. The Council accused Okafor of appointing individuals to the positions of “First Vice President” and “Second Vice President” without seeking the approval or ratification of the NEC, as required by the association’s constitution. Despite objections raised by council members, the appointees were reportedly added to official NEC communication platforms and allowed to participate in meetings.

The NEC also condemned the removal of the duly elected National Treasurer. According to the communiqué, the treasurer was allegedly removed from the NEC platform after raising concerns about the auditing of PMAN’s financial records. The Council described this action as an attempt to suppress accountability and weaken transparency within the association.

Beyond leadership appointments, the NEC expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the National Working Committee under Okafor’s leadership. It cited the failure to organise major nationally recognised programmes such as the PMAN Music Awards, as well as the absence of effective welfare initiatives for members and weak enforcement of regulatory standards in the music industry.

The communiqué further accused the suspended president of fostering an intolerant leadership style. According to the Council, dissenting opinions were often discouraged, teamwork undermined, and a hostile working environment created, all of which negatively affected the smooth administration of the association.

Another major issue highlighted was a controversial Joint Venture agreement concerning PMAN property in Abuja. The NEC disclosed that the arrangement allegedly allocates 60 per cent ownership to a developer, 30 per cent to PMAN, and an unexplained 10 per cent to an unidentified company. This structure, the Council said, raises serious concerns about transparency, potential conflicts of interest and possible financial misrepresentation.

As part of its resolutions, the NEC announced that all unilateral appointments made by the suspended president have been nullified with immediate effect. The Council also confirmed the reinstatement of the National Treasurer and approved the commencement of a forensic audit into PMAN’s financial records, including recent Joint Venture agreements.

The association called on its members across the country to remain calm, emphasising that the suspension is a corrective step rather than a punitive measure. The NEC stressed that the action was taken in the interest of restoring credibility, accountability and good governance within PMAN.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of Nigerian musicians, the Council stated that it remains focused on strengthening internal processes, upholding constitutional provisions and ensuring that the association operates in a transparent and democratic manner going forward.
