Afrobeat singer and saxophonist, Made Kuti, has opened up on why he deliberately keeps his distance from social media, explaining that the choice is rooted in self-discipline and focus rather than a desire to avoid public visibility.

The musician shared his thoughts during a panel discussion at the 13th edition of the Ake Arts and Books Festival, recently held at Bon Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos. He appeared alongside his father, Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti, during a conversation centred on Mrs Kuti, a memoir written by Remilekun Kuti. The session was moderated by award-winning poet, Dami Ajayi.

Reflecting on growing up in a famous household, Made noted that his early exposure to public attention helped him develop coping mechanisms similar to those his father experienced during childhood.

“But back to what he said as well, about growing up as a child in a famous family. So I had similar experiences as he did, but I learnt to sort of manage those experiences at a very young age,” he said.

Addressing his absence from social platforms, the musician clarified that his decision was not about avoiding the limelight but about resisting the constant craving for attention and approval.

“So for example at this moment, I don’t have social media on my phone because I prefer to stay away from not so much limelight, but more so the desire to always be the subject of attention,” he explained. He added that his focus as an artist is centred on honing his craft and letting his work speak for itself. “I really believe that what I should do as a musician is practice my music as best as I can and deliver music to the best of my abilities. And that is what should define me.”

Made also spoke about the stark contrast between his upbringing and that of his father. According to him, while Femi Kuti was raised in an environment driven by national and political consciousness, his own childhood prioritised family values and personal stability.

“This kind of thinking, my philosophy in life, the fact that I can say I love one woman and want to stay with her for the rest of my life. That’s not him,” he said, highlighting the difference in perspectives. “I grew up in a home where family was priority. My father grew up in a home where the country was priority.”

Although he spent time around the Afrika Shrine, Made stressed that his father ensured balance and guidance throughout his upbringing. He credited Femi Kuti for creating a supportive environment that allowed him and his siblings to thrive.

“Myself and my siblings have had a great upbringing… from love, teachings about life, my academics, my passion, what I want to pursue,” he said, adding that the stability he experienced has shaped him into a grounded individual.

His remarks on commitment and choosing to stay with one partner for life were met with applause from members of the audience at the event.
