Nigerian Fuji music icon King Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Kwam1 or K1, has sparked heated debates online after revealing his intention to contest for the throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
In a letter of intent shared publicly, the Fuji singer outlined his eligibility for the prestigious position, noting that he is a legitimate descendant of the Ruling House of Agunsebi Quarters and tracing his lineage to the Oba Jadiara line.
Kwam1 stated that tradition allows him to present himself for consideration, given his ancestry.
“I have devoted over five decades to promoting Ijebu, Yoruba, and Nigerian culture through music and cultural initiatives,” Kwam1 wrote. “Throughout my career, I have been honoured with numerous traditional and national recognitions, including my installation as Mayegun of Yorubaland, the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), and titles such as Olori Omo-Oba and Otunba Afidipotemole of Akile Ijebu.”
Despite his extensive cultural contributions, the announcement has divided public opinion, with some social media users questioning his suitability for the throne.
One user, gbamuss, commented, “The throne is for a humble person, not an arrogant narcissist like him.”
Another, Iam_seyemasel, wrote, “Tinubu go put am if they allow politics.”
myfashionhouse_org added, “Make una sha hide una wives cos e don be that.”
Meanwhile, cakingfast expressed, “Baba face your career jeje, we no want you, sir.”
Other reactions included:
• aminatbabalola75: “God forbid! We don’t want.”
• olubajo.gbenga: “Person wey stingy. We don’t want.”
• knowels001: “Na everything you wan do.”
• freebies_fabrics: “Who will now do he singing Ade Ori Okin? Or can he do both?”
• Kemynb: “Who will be singing for us?”
Kwam1’s pursuit of the Awujale throne follows his recent recognition as The New Olori Omoba Akile Ijebu during the 2023 Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu. The singer shared his confirmation letter on social media, expressing gratitude to God for the honour. The achievement was celebrated by celebrities including Mercy Aigbe Adeoti, Shina Peller, Queen Salawa Abeni, and other close associates.
Beyond his own accolades, Kwam1 has expressed pride in his children’s accomplishments. Last year, his daughter Dani Marshall was appointed Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Tourism to the Lagos State Government, a move that drew mixed reactions online. Kwam1 publicly congratulated her during an event, calling her “the newest appointee in town.”
In another display of familial pride, the Fuji maestro was seen in a viral video shedding tears as his other daughter graduated from an Islamic school, fluently reciting the Quran during the ceremony.
With his extensive cultural contributions, prestigious titles, and proud family milestones, Kwam1 continues to command attention both in music and in public life, even as debates around his bid for the Awulaje throne unfold across social media.
