Former First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has revealed that she has no plans to remarry, describing the decision as pragmatic rather than moralistic.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Charles Omole, author of her new biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Buhari explained her stance, saying, “She will not remarry… it is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one: she has grandchildren; one husband was enough.”

The 600-page biography, unveiled at the State House in Abuja, traces Aisha Buhari’s life from her early years in Daura, Katsina State, to her final moments with former President Muhammadu Buhari in a London hospital in mid-July 2025.

The book highlights her decision to remain single as a refusal to conform to cultural expectations that often place widows into binary roles of either saintliness or betrayal. Instead, Mrs. Buhari charts her own path, focusing on her personal priorities and family life.

According to the biography, Aisha Buhari plans to lead a quieter public life, dedicating time to her family, philanthropy, and travel.

She intends to spend quality time with her grandchildren, ensuring that her presence is felt in their lives not as a distant public figure but as an active part of their upbringing.

Beyond family, she will continue her philanthropic work through the Aisha Buhari Foundation and the cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has successfully completed over two hundred medical procedures.

The book notes that Mrs. Buhari will maintain her engagement in social and charitable activities, hosting and collaborating with friends and associates while extending her ethic of care into a more sustainable and private sphere.

This decision represents a personal reset after decades in the political spotlight. Dr. Omole describes it as “a politics of departure,” allowing others to take center stage while she focuses on personal fulfillment and healing.

Aisha Buhari’s marriage to Muhammadu Buhari began on December 2, 1989, following his divorce in 1988. Born in 1971 in Adamawa State, she became First Lady in 2015 and was married for 35 years, raising five children with the former president.

Her tenure in public life offered both opportunities and challenges; it provided a platform for her to voice her opinions but also exposed her to criticism and exclusion from certain decision-making spaces.

Reflecting on her life, Mrs. Buhari emphasizes that her choice not to remarry is guided by personal and pragmatic considerations, rather than societal or cultural pressures.

The biography underscores that her decision is about defining the contours of her future, prioritizing family, personal well-being, and philanthropic endeavors.

Aisha Buhari’s candid revelation serves as a powerful reminder that personal decisions, especially regarding marriage, can be rooted in practicality and self-awareness, rather than convention.

Her story highlights a woman taking control of her life on her own terms, ensuring that her legacy encompasses both public service and meaningful family engagement.
