A Nigerian cancer patient, Mensah Omolola, popularly known on X (formerly Twitter) as Auntieesther, has passed away weeks after publicly declining a blood transfusion during her treatment due to her religious convictions.

The news of her death was confirmed on Saturday by a close associate identified as #AUNTYMUSE_, who reacted to an announcement shared by another X user, @swaggsphotos. The user had posted, “Unfortunately, we lost Aunty Esther. Very sad!” In response, #AUNTYMUSE_ wrote, “May her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏.”

Auntieesther’s passing has since sparked renewed conversations online, especially given the public attention her medical journey attracted in recent months.

The late Mensah Omolola, a Jehovah’s Witness, had earlier disclosed that she refused a blood transfusion while undergoing cancer treatment, explaining that her decision was based strictly on her religious beliefs. Members of the faith are known to decline blood transfusions in adherence to their doctrinal interpretations.

Before her death, Auntieesther had gone public with her health struggles and received overwhelming support from Nigerians across social media platforms. Her story resonated widely, leading to a major fundraising effort to support her medical expenses.

The fundraiser was coordinated by media personality Wisdom Obi-Dickson, popularly known on X as @Wizarab10, who rallied support from well-meaning Nigerians. Through the campaign, over ₦30 million was reportedly raised to assist with her treatment and related medical needs.

At the time, Auntieesther expressed deep appreciation for the generosity shown to her, acknowledging both the financial and emotional support she received. She had also reassured supporters that medical tests indicated her cancer was limited to her breast and armpit, offering hope that her condition was being managed.

Despite the donations and support, her refusal to accept a blood transfusion later became a major point of public discussion, with many Nigerians debating the intersection of faith, medical ethics and survival. While some respected her decision as an expression of religious freedom, others expressed concern about the implications of rejecting certain life-saving medical procedures.

Following the confirmation of her death, tributes and condolences have continued to pour in from social media users, many describing her as brave and principled, while others expressed sadness over the outcome of her health battle.

Several users who had followed her journey closely recalled her openness during the fundraising period, noting that she regularly updated supporters and remained grateful for every contribution made toward her care.

The news has also reignited conversations around healthcare access, religious beliefs in medical decision-making, and the emotional toll faced by patients battling life-threatening illnesses. Some commentators have urged for more education and dialogue around alternative medical options for individuals whose faith restricts certain treatments.

Others, however, emphasized the importance of respecting personal convictions, even in difficult circumstances, stressing that every individual has the right to make choices aligned with their beliefs.

Auntieesther’s death marks a sorrowful end to a story that captured national attention, drew widespread compassion, and highlighted the powerful role of community support in times of crisis.

Her supporters continue to mourn her loss, offering prayers and messages of comfort in her memory, while reflecting on the complex realities surrounding faith, health and personal choice.
