The driver of the vehicle involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two associates of British-Nigerian boxing heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from the hospital and may soon face prosecution for reckless driving.

The development was confirmed following a visit by journalists to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where Anthony Joshua is currently receiving treatment after sustaining injuries in the accident that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua is reported to be in stable condition as he continues to recover from the incident.

According to sources, the driver, who was behind the wheel of the SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team, has been discharged after receiving medical attention.

He has since reported to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office at the Sagamu interchange, where he gave a statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities revealed that he could be prosecuted for reckless driving based on preliminary findings.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the driver is currently cooperating with investigators. “Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital and he is currently giving his statement,” Hundeyin told journalists.

However, the situation took another turn as officials of the FRSC disclosed that the truck driver involved in the accident allegedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.

According to an FRSC official, the truck driver has now been declared wanted as investigations continue.

Earlier, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State had provided insight into the cause of the accident.

The agency stated that preliminary investigations revealed that a burst tyre played a major role in the crash. TRACE explained that the front tyre on the passenger side of the SUV Joshua was travelling in burst while the vehicle was in motion, leading to a loss of control.

TRACE spokesman, Babatunde Akinbiyi, further disclosed that overspeeding was a major factor. Speaking to reporters, he said the SUV was moving at excessive speed when the tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle swerved and crashed into a stationary truck parked along the road.

According to Akinbiyi, “From the preliminary investigation that was conducted, there was overspeeding on the part of the SUV Anthony Joshua was travelling in.

The front tyre on the passenger side burst, leading to loss of control before the vehicle rammed into the stationary truck. There was excessive speed.”

The accident claimed the lives of two members of Anthony Joshua’s team, identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Both men reportedly died at the scene of the crash. Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promoters, confirmed their deaths in an emotional statement.

“With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away,” the statement read.

Matchroom chairman, Eddie Hearn, also paid tribute to the deceased, describing them as great men and extending his prayers to their families and loved ones.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities work to establish full accountability for the tragic crash.
