Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is gearing up for a return to action-packed cinema with her upcoming thriller, Sunny.
The film follows a female gangster who must safeguard her two sons from an abusive drug lord, racing against time to plan a permanent escape following a traumatic event.
Jolie has begun production on the project, which is directed by Eva Sørhaug and co-written by Sørhaug and William Day Frank for Gramercy Park Media, A Higher Standard, and Nickel City Pictures.
Mark Fasano, producer at Nickel City Pictures, praised Jolie’s performance, calling her a “tour-de-force.” He added, “People are going to be shocked by what she brings to this riveting character. This violent world is grounded in survival and family, led by a mother doing everything she can to protect her boys.”
At 50, Jolie recently earned acclaim for her portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas in Maria, bringing her signature intensity to Sunny. She shared with Variety that filming Maria required her to “bluff” through singing scenes, despite having no professional training.
The project follows Jolie’s recent humanitarian trip to Ukraine, where she visited frontline areas in Kherson and Mykolaiv amid the Russian invasion. During her visit, she witnessed how local schools and hospitals were relocated underground for safety. “The people of Mykolaiv and Kherson live with danger every day, but they refuse to give in,” Jolie said.
Producers have also lauded Jolie’s commitment to the role. Nathan Klingher of Gramercy Park commented, “Angelina has made this role uniquely her own. Strong, character-driven thrillers like this are rare, and the work she and Eva have done is impressive.”
Sunny promises to showcase Jolie’s action prowess while telling the story of a mother’s resilience in a dangerous and high-stakes world.
