This posthumous honour recognises Fela’s monumental contributions to music and his enduring influence on artists across the globe.

Often hailed as the “architect of Afrobeat,” Fela’s unique sound and politically charged compositions have left an indelible mark on the music industry and continue to inspire new generations of musicians worldwide.

The Grammy recognition follows the induction of Fela’s iconic 1976 album, Zombie, into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, further solidifying his legacy.

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, described this year’s honorees as “an extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music.”

His ability to blend traditional Nigerian sounds with modern instruments and arrangements created a genre that remains relevant decades after his passing.

With this historic Grammy honour, Fela Kuti’s contributions to music and culture are formally recognised on a global platform, shining a spotlight on African artistry and inspiring future generations of musicians to carry forward his legacy.
