Beauty entrepreneur and social media influencer Laura Ikeji Kanu has ignited widespread online conversation after calling out what she described as excessive greed among service providers in Nigeria, particularly during the popular festive season known as “Detty December.”

In a candid video shared on her Instagram page, the businesswoman expressed frustration over the sudden and drastic increase in prices for everyday services, with hair braiding serving as her primary example. According to Laura, a hairstyle she comfortably paid ₦70,000 for before traveling out of Nigeria is now being quoted at ₦200,000, while some stylists boldly demand ₦250,000, simply because it is December.

She described the situation as unreasonable and warned that such unchecked price hikes could ruin the holiday experience for many people. While acknowledging that December is often a high-income period for businesses, Laura argued that taking advantage of customers under the excuse of seasonal demand is unfair and damaging.

Addressing a common stereotype, Laura challenged the belief that Nigerians living abroad are endlessly wealthy. She emphasized that many diaspora Nigerians are regular people who work hard, budget carefully, and return home to relax, not to be exploited financially.

According to her, this practice of inflating prices specifically for returning Nigerians has been growing steadily. She questioned the justification for nearly tripling the cost of a service within a short time, stressing that “even the ₦70,000 was already expensive.”

Laura also turned her attention to the housing crisis, criticizing the impact of short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb. She alleged that landlords, after seeing the profits made from daily short-let rates, now apply the same logic to annual rent, pushing prices beyond the reach of average Nigerians.

She concluded by stating that greed remains a major issue affecting multiple sectors of the Nigerian economy, urging service providers to strike a balance between profit and fairness, especially during festive seasons meant for joy and celebration.

Her comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing with her stance, while others argue that market demand naturally dictates pricing.
