Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has once again found himself in legal trouble, this time outside the criminal case that sent him to prison.
Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, has been fined $20,000 after a U.S. court held him and his lawyer, Crystal Morgan, in contempt for their conduct during a deposition tied to Megan’s defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz.
According to the court order, the incident occurred during a deposition on November 14, when Megan’s legal team attempted to question Lanez about his relationship and communications with Gramz.
The lawsuit accuses Gramz of spreading damaging and false narratives about Megan, and Lanez’s involvement in those conversations became a central part of the questioning.
The order states that Lanez quickly became uncooperative, repeatedly refused to answer questions, and challenged the consequences of his refusal.
When he was informed he could be sanctioned or held in contempt, Lanez responded dismissively, saying: “Whatever the fines are, I’ll pay them. I’m a millionaire. I don’t care.”
What followed was a chaotic scene. Lanez told Megan’s lawyers to “calm down” and “relax,” accused them of lying, and walked out of the deposition room.
He later returned, only to become frustrated again after arguing that he had not been given all the exhibits Megan’s team intended to use ahead of time. After making more derogatory comments, he refused to continue and left the room for the second time, ending the deposition entirely.
The court order also faulted Lanez’s attorney, Crystal Morgan, for deliberately obstructing the process. It states that she made “lengthy speaking objections,” coached Lanez through his answers, and repeatedly disrupted the questioning even after being instructed to stop.
The judge said the questions being asked were “clearly relevant,” especially those regarding communications between Lanez and Gramz, yet Morgan never once directed her client to answer.
This was not the first failed attempt to depose the rapper. Court records show that Megan’s team had tried twice before.
One deposition reportedly lasted only 44 minutes because Lanez “behaved inappropriately” and hurled personal insults at the attorney handling the questioning.
During another attempt, Lanez allegedly told prosecutors, “I’ve got jail for 10 years right now. You can do whatever you’d like to do,” when reminded of the consequences of refusing to cooperate.
Now, the court has imposed a $20,000 sanction as Megan’s defamation case moves forward. The lawsuit is set to go to trial on November 17, and Lanez has filed a protective order requesting that he not be subjected to any additional questioning.
However, the judge has made it clear that his behavior in the deposition falls below legal standards.
Lanez was convicted in 2023 after being found guilty of shooting Megan in the foot during an argument after a party at Kylie Jenner’s home. His prison sentence continues while legal issues surrounding the shooting and now the defamation case keep unfolding.
