Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) has called on the federal government to involve National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in efforts to combat insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking on the growing security challenges in the country, Ashimolowo emphasized that Nigeria’s youth population comprising about 60 per cent of the nation represents a largely untapped resource that could play a significant role in national safety.

Drawing lessons from Israel, where citizens begin mandatory military service at 18, the pastor argued that similar training and structured engagement for NYSC members could enhance public safety across Nigeria.

“The nation should look for ways to harness Nigerians. If we train our youth early, like Israel does, we will increase our security level and make our people proud to be Nigerians,” Ashimolowo said.

The cleric also cautioned against over-reliance on state police, highlighting the potential for misuse of these forces for personal or political agendas.

He stressed that building a security-conscious populace, particularly among young Nigerians, is critical to tackling the country’s rising crime rate.

Ashimolowo noted that kidnappings and ransom-related crimes are on the rise, driven in part by the lure of financial gain. He suggested that engaging the youth proactively could not only curb criminal activities but also foster a sense of responsibility and patriotism.

“Let’s raise the security level and tap into the brains in our nation. Nigeria is a strong and proud country, and we must ensure our youth are part of building that strength,” he added.

The pastor urged Nigerians to support government initiatives aimed at enhancing security, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in addressing national challenges.

He described the Nigerian populace as bold and resilient, admired across Africa for their tenacity, and called for unity between leadership and citizens in creating safer communities.

Ashimolowo further recommended proactive measures, including structured training, community engagement, and education for young people, to reduce their susceptibility to criminal influences.

He highlighted that a well-trained youth force could serve as a formidable tool in safeguarding national interests and preventing the escalation of insecurity.

His remarks come amid increasing concern over Nigeria’s security situation, particularly with the rising incidents of kidnappings, armed banditry, and other violent crimes.

Ashimolowo’s proposal positions the country’s youth as a strategic resource, advocating for their empowerment and involvement in national security frameworks rather than leaving the responsibility solely to conventional law enforcement agencies.

In conclusion, Pastor Ashimolowo’s call reflects a broader discussion on the role of citizens, particularly the youth, in ensuring national safety.

By integrating training, discipline, and civic engagement into programs like the NYSC, Nigeria could develop a more proactive and security-conscious generation, ultimately contributing to long-term peace and stability in the country.
