The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the violent attack on Fuji music icon, Obesere, and his crew in Okitipupa, bringing attention to rising concerns about security at public events across the state.
The incident occurred on Friday shortly after Obesere and his team concluded a performance at a burial ceremony in Okitipupa, a town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State. According to eyewitness accounts, chaos erupted as the musician was preparing to leave the venue. In the confusion that followed, Obesere and some of his team members were reportedly assaulted, while several of their personal belongings were stolen.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Soga Andrew Ogunsakin, issued a public statement condemning the attack and assuring residents that swift action was being taken. In the statement—released to DAILY POST and also shared via his official Facebook page—Ogunsakin disclosed that three suspects had already been apprehended, while efforts to trace other implicated individuals were ongoing.
He explained that the local government immediately moved into action upon receiving reports of the incident.
“Upon receiving the report on the unfortunate incident involving Obesere, I immediately swung into action to ensure accountability and restore calm,” Ogunsakin said. He further noted that “three suspects connected to the disturbance have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals involved. Some items said to have been stolen have also been successfully recovered.”
The LG chairman added that he had reached out to Obesere’s management team to arrange a meeting aimed at expressing the government’s concern and ensuring that the matter is properly followed up. “I have contacted Obesere’s management for a scheduled meeting. This will help me express deep concern over the incident,” he stated.
The assault has triggered public outrage, particularly among fans of the legendary Fuji artist, many of whom expressed dismay over the lack of adequate security at public gatherings such as burial ceremonies, weddings, and community festivals. Residents of Okitipupa, reacting to the news, have demanded stricter security measures to avoid similar occurrences, especially when high-profile entertainers are invited to perform.
Ogunsakin assured the community that investigations by the police and local authorities were ongoing and that all individuals involved in the attack would face the law. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and order within the local government area.
The police command has not released further details about the identities of the arrested suspects or the motive behind the assault. However, sources within the community suggest that the altercation may have stemmed from a disagreement among some attendees at the event, which later escalated into a mob-like attack on the musician’s entourage.
Obesere, known for his energetic performances and long-standing contributions to Fuji music, has not yet issued a personal statement regarding the attack. However, close associates say he is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation progresses.
