Veteran music producer Samklef has stirred conversation in the Nigerian music scene by claiming that ace rapper and YBNL boss Olamide has made a greater impact on the industry than renowned music executive Don Jazzy.
His remarks come amid the backlash Olamide is currently facing for declaring Wizkid as “the greatest Afrobeats artist after Fela.”
Responding to critics, Samklef argued that Olamide’s contributions to the Nigerian music industry are often underestimated.
On his X handle, the producer wrote, “Devil go punish anybody wey talk down on Olamide! His impact in the industry even Don Jazzy Dey learn. It was Olamide who humble Don Jazzy after that Headies wahala and broke the chain of the industry gatekeepers.
Na him make Don Jazzy dey wear this new mask. After Wizkid, na Olamide get the real street credibility.”
According to Samklef, Olamide deserves respect not only for his musical talent but also for his role in dismantling longstanding industry hierarchies.
By breaking the chain of gatekeepers, he allowed more opportunities for upcoming artists to thrive without being constrained by traditional structures.
Both Olamide and Don Jazzy are widely recognized as pivotal figures in shaping contemporary Nigerian music.
Don Jazzy rose to prominence as co-owner of the now-defunct Mo’Hits Records alongside D’banj, nurturing talents such as Wande Coal, D’Prince, and Dr Sid. After Mo’Hits split, Don Jazzy launched Mavin Records, which has since produced stars like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Johnny Drille, Rema, and Ayra Starr.
Olamide, through his YBNL imprint, has similarly propelled the careers of several artists who have gone on to become household names, including Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Fireboy DML, and Asake.
His ability to spot talent and cultivate street credibility has cemented his position as one of Nigeria’s most influential music executives.
The debate over who has had a greater impact highlights the evolving nature of the Nigerian music industry, where the contributions of both veterans and contemporary figures intersect.
While Don Jazzy has been instrumental in shaping mainstream Afrobeats and nurturing a generation of stars, Olamide’s influence lies in his ability to give emerging artists a platform and bring authentic street sounds to the forefront.
Samklef’s commentary underscores the respect and recognition that Olamide commands among industry peers. By emphasizing the rapper’s role in reshaping the music landscape, he challenges fans and critics to appreciate the broader contributions beyond chart-topping hits.
As the conversation continues, it is clear that both Olamide and Don Jazzy have left indelible marks on the Nigerian music industry, each shaping its trajectory in unique ways.
The ongoing debate over their respective impacts serves as a reminder of their influence and the legacies they continue to build
