Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has raised concerns about the state of the country’s music industry, claiming that music has lost its intrinsic value and played a role in the moral decline of society.
The singer, who is a vocal advocate for conscious and meaningful music, expressed his views during an appearance on the Adesope Live show.
Speaking on the show, Spyro lamented the shift in focus within the industry, stating, “In the past, artists were passing meaningful messages regardless of whatever genre they were doing. But now, music is just vibes.
We are just vibing. In as much as vibes are cool, I feel like music has lost its intrinsic value. Back then, you would get goosebumps listening to music. Vibes are cool. But how can we infuse messages, values into vibes?”
According to the singer, the prioritization of commercial success over message-driven content has contributed to the rise in societal decadence.
“A lot of the decadence that we have in society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We are now just singing for money. A lot of us are into the business for money, not to make impact,” he added.
Spyro’s concerns reflect a broader discussion within the Nigerian music industry, where the rise of upbeat, party-focused tracks has overshadowed socially conscious songwriting.
While artists continue to experiment with different sounds and genres, the emphasis on creating viral hits often comes at the expense of meaningful lyrics and life lessons that earlier generations of musicians delivered.
Despite the challenges he highlighted, Spyro remains committed to producing music with substance. He believes that music should not only entertain but also inspire, educate, and guide listeners.
His perspective resonates with a segment of music lovers who long for a return to songs that carry moral lessons, cultural values, and reflections on real-life experiences.
Spyro’s comments also touch on the business side of the industry, noting that many artists focus primarily on financial gain rather than impact.
This approach, he argues, undermines the transformative power of music, reducing it to a commercial commodity instead of a medium for social commentary and moral guidance.
The singer’s advocacy for conscious music underscores the importance of balancing entertainment with purpose. By urging artists to infuse their work with values and meaningful messages, Spyro hopes to influence a shift in the industry that could contribute to a more morally aware and socially responsible society.
As Nigerian music continues to dominate the global stage, Spyro’s reflections serve as a reminder that artistic success and societal impact can go hand in hand.
He calls on fellow musicians to prioritize substance alongside style, ensuring that future generations of listeners can enjoy music that not only moves the body but also nurtures the mind.
