Award-winning American rapper Nicki Minaj has lauded U.S. President Donald Trump following his decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom.

The U.S. president made the announcement on Friday, citing what he described as a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria and accusing extremist groups of being behind the “mass slaughter” of believers. Trump also revealed plans to direct the House Appropriations Committee to begin an immediate probe into the matter.

Reacting to the development on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Minaj expressed gratitude for the ability to freely worship in the United States while calling attention to the growing cases of religious persecution across the world.

She wrote: “Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other.

“Numerous countries all around the world are being affected by this horror & it’s dangerous to pretend we don’t notice. Thank you to the President & his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. Let’s remember to lift them up in prayer.”

The U.S. government classifies a country of particular concern (CPC) as one that consistently exhibits severe violations of religious freedom, including systematic discrimination or violence. The designation is made by the Secretary of State with the authorization of the president.

Nigeria first appeared on the CPC list in 2020 during Trump’s first term but was removed under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Minaj’s post has since attracted widespread attention, with many commending her for using her platform to speak on global religious intolerance.
