Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has opened up about the mindset that has helped him stay consistent in the highly competitive music industry.
The “Limpopo” hitmaker said one of his biggest strengths is refusing to get discouraged whenever he faces challenges, especially when trying to score a hit song.
Kcee made the revelation while speaking on the Selah Meditate podcast. He explained that unlike some artistes who retreat or become depressed when a new song fails to perform well, he does the complete opposite.
Instead of slowing down, he intensifies his efforts, releases more music and stays active until a new hit emerges.
According to him, the belief in consistency has carried him through various difficult phases. “Some of my colleagues can drop a song and if it goes bad, they go back to their shell and they are sad.
But that can’t be me,” he said. Kcee stressed that he is never afraid to put out multiple tracks even if only one ends up resonating widely.
“I can drop 22 songs, maybe it is the 25th one that will become a hit. I don’t care because consistency is key.”
The singer noted that many people assume that successful artistes hardly face setbacks or moments of uncertainty, but he has experienced several rough patches throughout his career.
However, he said the public rarely notices because he is always determined to present himself positively, maintaining a flamboyant and confident image regardless of the challenges he may be facing privately.
Kcee also spoke about the important role positive manifestation has played in shaping his journey. He recalled his early days living in Ajegunle with his younger brother, businessman Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money. Despite their modest living conditions at the time, they spoke boldly about their dreams and the future they wanted.
“When me and E-Money were living in Ajegunle, if you asked us where we were living, we would say Ikeja,” he said.
The singer clarified that this was not an attempt to deceive anyone but rather a form of speaking their aspirations into existence.
“We were not lying or pretending, we were dreaming, prophesying into the future. And that was where we eventually moved to. And we dominated it.”
Kcee added that his career is a testament to the power of persistence, discipline and unwavering belief in one’s future.
He encouraged up-and-coming artistes not to be consumed by fear of failure or the pressure of instant success. Instead, he urged them to stay committed to the grind, continue releasing music, and trust the process.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the music community about the pressure Nigerian artistes face to produce back-to-back hits.
Many industry followers have praised Kcee’s philosophy, noting that his long career and numerous charting songs are proof that consistency often matters more than speed.
