Ethan Slater, the Broadway actor currently dating pop star Ariana Grande, has sparked renewed speculation about a split after sidestepping a question about their relationship during a television interview.
Slater and Grande, co-stars in the upcoming Wicked film adaptation, began their romance while working on the two-part musical. Their relationship drew heavy backlash last year because Slater was still married to his ex-wife, Lilly Jay, with whom he shares a three-year-old son.
Rumours intensified earlier this year after the couple—aged 33 and 32—had not been seen publicly together from April until this month. Their joint appearance in group photos at the New York premiere of Wicked: For Good initially eased concerns among fans who thought they had quietly split.
But Slater set the rumour mill turning once again during an interview on the Today show. When asked about “working with your girlfriend every day,” he chose not to address their relationship directly. Instead, he pivoted to praising the overall cast, describing them as “incredible.” He did compliment Grande, calling her “brilliant,” while also drawing attention to co-star Cynthia Erivo, whom he described as “remarkable,” adding that watching both actresses perform up close was “pretty special.”
Despite the renewed chatter, a source told The Sun that the couple are “still together,” even though their behaviour at last week’s London premiere raised eyebrows. According to the insider, they deliberately avoided being photographed side by side but met privately afterwards.
“Ariana and Ethan are still a couple, but they’ve seen the online talk and it hasn’t been easy,” the source explained. “They were both at the premiere and the after-party but made sure they weren’t seen together.”
The insider also said the pair have been intentionally keeping their romance out of the public eye. Following the London after-party, Grande returned to her hotel first, and Slater later went up to meet her.
Their relationship has been under constant public scrutiny. Reports last month suggested that their wedding plans had been paused and that the couple had been “on and off” in recent months.
Grande had recently ended her marriage to Dalton Gomez when news of her relationship with Slater surfaced in July 2023. Slater, still legally married to Lilly Jay at the time, went on to file for divorce shortly after the controversy broke.
