“Children Are an Expensive Subscription” – Izzy Ogbeide

Controversial content creator, Izzy Ogbeide, has once again ignited heated conversations online after a video of her boldly declaring that children are neither blessings nor gifts from God went viral on Wednesday. 

The mother of three, known for her unfiltered takes on parenting and relationships, insisted that children are simply a product of human effort and not divine favour.

In the trending clip, Ogbeide described children as “an expensive subscription you cannot cancel,” stressing that people only romanticize parenting until the responsibilities hit. 

She argued that many parents underestimate the emotional, financial and personal strain that comes with raising a child, yet still cling to the belief that children are blessings handed down from heaven.

According to her, the idea that children come directly from God does not align with the harsh realities many families face. 

She explained that parenting comes with heavy bills and sacrifices, noting that some parents can barely feed their children yet still quote scriptures about blessings.

 Ogbeide maintained that if children were truly divine gifts, then God would automatically equip parents with the resources to care for them without stress or struggle.

Her words sparked immediate reactions. Critics accused her of insulting religious values and disrespecting the role faith plays in family life. 

Many argued that children, despite the challenges, remain blessings that enrich lives in ways money cannot measure. Others described her statement as insensitive, especially coming from a mother.

However, a significant number of online users supported her take, saying she only voiced what many parents quietly feel but are afraid to admit. 

They agreed that while society glorifies parenting, the financial and emotional responsibilities are often overwhelming, especially in today’s economic climate.

Ogbeide went further to break down how expensive raising a child has become. She mentioned costs like school fees, healthcare, feeding, and extracurricular activities such as swimming and football training. 

She noted that these expenses pile up quickly, making children less of a “blessing” and more of a demanding lifelong responsibility.

In her words: “Children are not blessings, and they are not from God. Children are from you, not God. They are an expensive subscription you can’t return or cancel. What comes from God is something you don’t merit or work for. 

The Bible even says the blessing of the Lord adds no sorrow. Children bring responsibility, stress and bills. If children were truly from God, He would first bless the parents before giving them children.”

Her comments have since sparked debates on X and Instagram, with thousands weighing in on whether parenting is a calling, a personal choice, or simply a biological outcome. 

While the argument continues, one thing is clear  Ogbeide has, once again, succeeded in stirring conversations about the realities of modern parenting in Nigeria.
