Nigerian actress Bukola Arugba has strongly criticized Kwara State First Lady, Olufolake Abdulrazaq, over her handling of the recent violent attack on a church in the state. The actress accused the First Lady of downplaying the severity of the tragedy, which has left the local community in shock and mourning.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area. During a program that was being livestreamed, gunmen stormed the church, creating chaos and panic among worshippers. The attack resulted in the deaths of three people, while an unconfirmed number of congregants, including the church pastor, were abducted. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as the assailants overpowered the congregation and fled with several victims.
In response to the tragedy, the Kwara State First Lady issued a statement referring to the incident as an “attempted attack.” This characterization drew immediate criticism from Bukola Arugba, who argued that it misrepresented the reality of what occurred. In a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday evening, the actress challenged the First Lady directly, insisting that the violence was not thwarted but carried out successfully, with multiple casualties and abductions.
Arugba, who hails from the Eruku community, revealed that three of her own family members were among those kidnapped during the attack. She named her aunt, Titi Balogun, and two cousins, Ebenezer and Aina, as victims still in the hands of the assailants. She expressed deep disappointment and frustration over the First Lady’s statement, emphasizing that it contradicted the tragic reality faced by residents and families of the victims.
Addressing the First Lady, Arugba said her message sought to correct the narrative presented in the official release. She highlighted the viral videos that circulated online during the attack, which clearly showed the program being disrupted violently and people being abducted. Arugba stressed that the statement describing the incident as an attempted attack ignored the pain and suffering of those affected, including those hospitalized or still missing.
The actress’s intervention has drawn attention to a broader concern among residents and victims’ families about how the state government is communicating on matters of security. Many have expressed frustration that officials often minimize or understate violent incidents, leaving communities feeling unheard and neglected. Arugba’s public criticism amplifies the voices of those demanding accountability and accurate representation of tragic events.
This incident in Eruku is a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges faced by communities across Kwara State. The abduction of worshippers during a live program not only highlights the vulnerability of ordinary citizens but also underscores the emotional toll such attacks have on families. By speaking out, Bukola Arugba has brought renewed focus on the human impact of these attacks and the urgent need for authorities to provide both protection and truthful communication to the public.
