Former Big Brother Naija star and actor Boma Akpore has revisited one of the most painful chapters of his personal life, revealing how a promising relationship he believed would lead to marriage abruptly fell apart due to family disapproval. Speaking during an emotional conversation on the WithChude podcast, Boma explained that he had already taken concrete steps toward proposing before everything came crashing down.
According to him, he was deeply in love and fully committed to taking the relationship to the next level. He shared that he had scheduled a trip to the United States in August specifically to purchase an engagement ring. For him, this was not a casual idea — it was a carefully planned step toward building a future with someone he cherished. Boma described how he had expressed his intentions clearly to his partner, telling her he wanted to marry her and picturing what their life together could look like.
However, his dreams were cut short when her family intervened and strongly opposed the union. Boma said the rejection was swift and absolute. The family, according to him, dismissed the possibility of marriage based on negative impressions they had formed — impressions that he believes came from public narratives surrounding his life as a celebrity. He suggested that the family’s decision was influenced more by rumours and misconceptions than by who he truly is in private.
Recalling the moment everything changed, Boma said:
“I met someone I really liked and I was going to marry. I was supposed to be engaging her last August. I was going to go to America, get the ring and bring it back because I liked her and I told her I was going to marry her.”
He went on to describe the relationship itself as beautiful and fulfilling, despite the natural ups and downs that come with any partnership. In his words, he saw the relationship as nearly perfect — something worth investing in and fighting for. But all the plans he had carefully built were disrupted by the family’s strong objection.
He continued, “It was an amazing relationship — yes, with normal ups and downs — but I thought it was perfect. Then the family got involved and said, ‘This guy? Hell no, impossible.’”
That outright rejection, he said, was devastating. Boma revealed that the disapproval “collapsed everything,” leaving him discouraged and emotionally drained. What pained him most was the feeling that he was being judged based on the public controversies and assumptions that come with being in the entertainment industry. He explained that the scrutiny that accompanies fame can distort how people perceive public figures, making loved ones vulnerable to biased opinions.
Reflecting on the experience, Boma noted that being in the spotlight often comes with a heavy price. “If I wasn’t in entertainment or in the public eye, nobody would know some things about me. Once you come into the public, that is the price you pay,” he said.
The BBNaija Shine Ya Eye alum, who gained prominence in 2021, added that although the heartbreak was deeply discouraging, it taught him a hard but valuable lesson about relationships, reputation, and the impact of public life on private choices.
