Nollywood actress and former Big Brother Naija star Bamike Adenibuyan, popularly known as BamBam, has given fans deeper insight into her approach to acting and why she deliberately avoids certain kinds of movie roles. While many actors embrace challenging characters to push their craft, BamBam explained that some storylines—especially those rooted in intense spiritual or occult themes—are not for her.
In a conversation with Saturday Beats, she admitted that her emotional and spiritual sensitivity plays a major role in the kind of projects she chooses. According to her, acting is deeply immersive, and that immersion can have real personal effects. “I am a very sensitive actor. I try to avoid deeply spiritual films, especially when I’m not sure or spiritually ready for them,” she said, noting that such roles sometimes require an actor to tap into energies or emotions she may not be comfortable engaging with.
BamBam further explained that preparing for a role goes far beyond memorising lines or showing up on set. For her, true performance requires stepping fully into the world, history, and mindset of the character she is playing. She shared how she approaches character development, saying, “When you get a script, you step into the role of that character. I got to understand Chioma’s personality and added a part of me to make her real. Acting is about understanding where your character is coming from so you can react as they would.”
This level of depth is part of the reason she is cautious about certain scripts. For characters with dark or spiritually intense journeys, she believes it is important to be mentally and spiritually prepared so as not to carry that weight outside the set.
BamBam also addressed a perception that has trailed many alumni of the Big Brother Naija reality show—the belief that they are often not trusted by filmmakers to deliver solid performances. She acknowledged that this bias exists within the industry and that it has affected opportunities for some. “I have heard stories that they don’t like casting ex–Big Brother Naija housemates because they don’t trust their delivery,” she said.
However, she added that digital platforms have become powerful tools for actors like herself to prove their craft. With platforms such as YouTube offering creators total freedom, BamBam noted that she has been able to showcase her skills to a wider audience without waiting for approval from industry gatekeepers. “But thank God for the YouTube platform; it has given me an opportunity to showcase my talent beyond being an ex-reality TV participant,” she added.
Despite the doubts some may have about reality TV stars transitioning into full-time acting, BamBam made it clear that she is committed to establishing herself as a serious actor. She emphasised that she is constantly working on her skills, expanding her range, and choosing roles that allow her to grow while staying true to her personal boundaries.
Her journey from reality television to Nollywood has not always been smooth, but BamBam believes that every challenge has shaped her into a more intentional and focused performer. She credited online platforms and loyal fans for giving her a space to evolve creatively and for helping her move beyond the “ex-BBNaija” label.
With her thoughtful approach to storytelling, clear boundaries, and ongoing determination, BamBam continues to carve out her own unique path in Nollywood—one carefully chosen role at a time.
