Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of Nigerian children, particularly of Igbo descent, who can no longer communicate in their native languages.
Edochie made this known in a post shared on his official Facebook page on Friday, October 3, 2025, where he described the trend as a major cultural failure that needs urgent correction.
The actor lamented that many Nigerian parents, especially those from Igbo-speaking regions, have neglected their responsibility to pass down indigenous languages to their children. According to him, this growing disconnection from cultural roots poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s linguistic identity.
“Many of us who are Igbos, our children cannot speak Igbo. It’s a failure on our part that must be corrected moving forward,” Edochie wrote.
He urged parents to take the preservation of their native tongues seriously by ensuring their children learn and speak them at home. He noted that the increasing dominance of English language in schools and everyday life has made it difficult for children to embrace their cultural heritage.
Edochie’s remarks have since generated widespread discussion on social media, with some Nigerians supporting his call for cultural revival, while others argued that modern educational systems and globalization have made it challenging for native languages to thrive.
Many social media users commended the actor for addressing the issue, describing his message as a timely reminder of the importance of cultural preservation in a rapidly changing world.
Edochie concluded by emphasizing that the revival of indigenous languages must begin at home, where parents have the most influence over their children’s cultural development
