Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Efe Irele, has called on Nigerian movie producers to create a balance between commercial appeal and meaningful storytelling in their works.
Speaking during an interview with Saturday Beats, Irele emphasized the importance of producing films that not only entertain audiences but also evoke emotion and inspire thought.
The actress, known for her dynamic roles across several Nollywood productions, noted that while many filmmakers are making impressive progress, the industry still faces the challenge of financial sustainability.
She stated that the Nigerian film sector must continue to produce movies that can attract both local and international audiences while maintaining profitability.
“I must commend a lot of filmmakers right now; we’re all pushing the bar higher. We definitely need more emotionally driven stories, but we also can’t dismiss those who focus on commercial success. At the end of the day, the industry has to generate money to keep going,” Irele said.
She pointed out that the growth of streaming platforms has greatly influenced how filmmakers tell their stories and how audiences consume content.
With more Nigerians now watching movies from home, the actress explained that producers must work harder to deliver cinematic experiences that will lure people back to theatres.
According to her, “Not everyone wants to go to the cinemas anymore, especially with streaming taking over. We have to make movies that make people laugh, unwind, and enjoy themselves, because that’s what a lot of viewers are looking for.”
Efe Irele stressed that although entertaining content is vital for commercial success, filmmakers must not abandon the art of deep, emotion-driven storytelling that touches lives and reflects societal issues. She maintained that Nollywood’s long-term success depends on its ability to balance artistry and business.
The actress also highlighted the importance of adapting to the changing entertainment landscape, noting that Nigerian filmmakers must continue to evolve in order to stay relevant in the global film market.
She said that streaming platforms have opened new opportunities for exposure, but they also demand higher standards of production and creativity.
“We can’t deny that streaming has given us access to a wider audience. However, it has also raised expectations. Viewers want quality, strong narratives, and authentic performances,” she said.
Irele’s comments come at a time when Nollywood is gaining increased recognition across the world, with more Nigerian films making it to international streaming platforms and film festivals.
She encouraged upcoming filmmakers to focus on storytelling that captures the essence of Nigerian culture while appealing to a global audience.
In her words, “We must tell stories that move people stories that make them laugh, cry, think, and dream. That’s how we preserve the soul of Nollywood.”
Efe Irele’s message serves as a reminder to the industry that while entertainment drives numbers, meaningful storytelling ensures longevity and emotional connection with audiences, which remains the true essence of filmmaking.
