Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has finally addressed the controversy surrounding her recent night out following her sister’s burial.

Phyna tragically lost her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, in an accident involving a Dangote truck in August. The reality star held a funeral in September to lay her sister to rest. Not long after, a video surfaced showing Phyna enjoying herself at a club alongside Nollywood actress Regina Daniels. The clip quickly went viral, sparking criticism from social media users who accused Phyna of being insensitive and moving on too quickly after the heartbreaking loss.

While some defended her actions, arguing that people grieve differently, others felt it was inappropriate for the star to be seen celebrating so soon. The backlash reignited discussions on social media about how public figures are expected to navigate personal tragedies under the constant scrutiny of the public eye.

Earlier, Regina Daniels had publicly defended Phyna, urging people not to judge how others handle grief. She reminded fans that mourning is deeply personal and that no one should dictate the way someone processes loss. Despite this defense, Phyna herself had remained silent until now, leaving room for speculation and criticism from online commentators.

Taking to her X account, Phyna finally broke her silence with a heartfelt post explaining her perspective on grief and mourning. She emphasized that grief does not follow a set schedule and that people cope in different ways.

“Grief has no manual, no fixed face, and no timetable. The fact that I choose to keep living, smiling, or sharing moments does not erase the pain I carry. Respect the process, even if you do not understand it. If you cannot extend compassion, then at least extend silence,” she wrote.

In her post, Phyna highlighted the importance of allowing individuals to navigate their emotions on their own terms, without judgment. Her message struck a chord with many fans who applauded her for speaking candidly about the complexity of grief. They noted that celebrating life or enjoying small moments does not mean one has forgotten or diminished the pain of loss.

Phyna’s response also sheds light on the pressure public figures face to present a curated version of their lives online, even when dealing with deeply personal matters. Fans and critics alike are quick to form opinions based on snippets of content, often failing to consider the context or the human emotions behind them.

By speaking openly about her experience, Phyna reminded her followers that grief is not linear and that each person’s journey is unique. She called for empathy and understanding, urging the public to respect others’ ways of coping with loss.

The reality star’s post serves as both a personal reflection and a message to society: that mourning is individual, complex, and should not be subjected to public judgment. Through her words, Phyna has reinforced the idea that healing and finding moments of joy, even in the midst of sorrow, are valid and necessary parts of life.
