Nigerian Juju legend, Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has said that having timeless classics remains the greatest legacy any musician can leave behind.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the veteran musician emphasized that it is every artist’s dream to create songs that stand the test of time. According to him, the true measure of a musician’s career is not wealth, fame, or awards, but the number of evergreen hits they can proudly claim.

“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced,” Sir Shina Peters said. “To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two; Of The World and Thriller. So, if I have four, I am accomplished.”

At 67, Sir Shina Peters has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential Juju musicians. Known for pioneering Afro-Juju a blend of Afrobeat, highlife, and Juju music his works dominated the Nigerian music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of his timeless tracks such as Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1) and Shinamania still enjoy massive recognition today.

However, the music icon expressed disappointment over the current direction of Nigeria’s music industry.

He lamented that the standards set by his generation of artists have been eroded by modern-day musicians who, in his words, prioritize fame and quick success over quality and substance.

“The industry we built with so much effort and creativity has been bastardised,” he lamented. “Many of these new artists do not respect structure or sound. Everything now is about trend and not legacy.”

Despite his criticism, Sir Shina Peters acknowledged that the new generation has taken Nigerian music global but insisted that creating enduring art is more important than achieving temporary success.

His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many music lovers debating his comparison to Michael Jackson. While some fans hailed him for his confidence and contribution to Nigerian music, others argued that comparing himself to the late American pop legend was an overstatement.

Sir Shina Peters’ legacy in Nigerian music remains undeniable. With over four decades in the industry, he continues to inspire younger artists and serve as a living bridge between the old and new generations of Afrobeat and Juju music.

As he reflected on his journey, the veteran reiterated his belief that true musical success lies in crafting songs that outlive their creators  songs that, decades later, still evoke memories and emotions among listeners.

For Sir Shina Peters, his “four evergreens” are proof that his name and sound will continue to resonate long after the spotlight fades.
