Nollywood actress, Laide Bakare, has stirred reactions online after revealing that she introduced her daughter to nightlife and alcohol at the age of 17.

The actress made the disclosure during a recent interview with content creator, Mr Lilgaga, where she explained her parenting style and the bond she shares with her daughter.

According to Bakare, she wanted her daughter to have her as the reference point when it comes to exploring nightlife and alcohol. She expressed pride in being the first to introduce her child to clubbing rather than leaving her to experience it elsewhere without guidance.

“I took my daughter to the club for the first time at 17. And I like the fact that in her memoir, she would reference me as the person who introduced her to alcohol and clubbing,” the movie star said.

Her statement, however, has drawn widespread criticism from Nigerians on social media, with many describing her action as “reckless parenting.” Some users argued that exposing a teenager to alcohol at such a young age was irresponsible and could negatively influence her development.

A user on X, @It_hafizski, wrote: “Introducing a 17-year-old to alcohol and nightlife is reckless parenting, not cruise. At that age, guidance and discipline should come first, not clubbing.”

Another commentator, @Just_2undey, noted: “Some of these people are not worth the pedestal the people place them on. All these coming from someone that calls herself a mother.”

For @DamiTheOG, the revelation highlights how celebrities often fail to set good examples. He stated: “Many of those you admire are often poor role models as parents.”

Similarly, @Shuluemp questioned her sense of pride in such an act. “Which kind of mother takes pride in introducing her 17-year-old to alcohol and clubbing?” he wrote.

While the majority condemned Bakare’s approach, some defended her decision, saying it may be a way of fostering openness and trust with her daughter.

One X user, @Sturbyrich, opined: “Low-key this thing normal, at least her daughter will be free to talk to her about anything. If she no carry her go club, she’ll still go by herself and might even do worse things.”

Another, @Brainpink, suggested that being overprotective could push teenagers into secrecy. “Make una leave her, that’s how she wants to train her girl. Because if you dey overprotect, sometimes she will still go to the club, drink alcohol and still smoke join, and you won’t notice. But sha, small small ooo.”

Bakare is no stranger to controversy as she has previously been in the news for her outspoken lifestyle and clashes with fellow Nollywood stars. Her latest revelation adds to the ongoing debate about modern parenting, celebrity influence, and the values being passed on to young people.

While some insist her approach reflects a liberal parenting style, critics argue that it undermines discipline and could normalize underage drinking.

The actress has yet to respond to the backlash that followed her comments, but the conversation continues to trend as Nigerians debate whether her actions were an attempt at responsible parenting or a clear case of misjudgment.
