Popular Yoruba comic actor, Tunde Usman, widely known by his stage name Okele, has shared the story behind how he came about the name that has now become an unforgettable identity in the Nigerian movie industry.

In an exclusive recount, the veteran comedian revealed that the name Okele was not originally his idea but one that came from a character he played during his early days in theatre. He explained that he got the name while still struggling to establish himself as an actor and performing with a local drama troupe.

“During my early stage in acting, we had a rehearsal and I was selected to play one of the King’s aides. I was given the name Okele in the script,” he said. “The rehearsal took place in an open space where passersby could stand and watch us. I vividly remember that after each rehearsal, the kids around would run after me, calling me Okele. That’s how the name stuck.”

According to the comic actor, the name immediately began to gain attention beyond the rehearsals. What started as a stage name quickly became his identity, as both his colleagues and fans started referring to him as Okele in real life. He explained that the character resonated with people, and the children’s playful chants after every rehearsal made it impossible for him to shake off the nickname.

“At that time, a lot of us still had our personal jobs. I was into electronics repair, while others had their own trades. Our group eventually disbanded, and I joined another acting troupe,” he recalled. “From there, we created a smaller group and drew a lot of inspiration from the late Baba Suwe’s comedy series, ‘Erin Keeke.’”

Okele described those early years as challenging but rewarding. He noted that the passion for acting kept him going even when he was juggling it with other forms of work. According to him, comedy was not as financially rewarding in those days, but the love for performance and the joy of making people laugh gave him strength to continue.

He also reflected on how the Yoruba movie industry has evolved over the years, noting that while technology and social media have made things easier for the younger generation, it has also brought new challenges. He emphasized that comedy in Yoruba films remains a vital part of Nigerian entertainment and must be nurtured through mentorship and creative development.

“People like us must not die with the talent in us. They must do a very mighty seminar that the upcoming ones will gain from it,” he said.

The actor, who is now one of the most recognizable faces in Yoruba comedy, credited veteran performers like the late Baba Suwe for inspiring his style of performance and helping to shape his comedic craft. Okele’s natural ability to blend humor with real-life situations has made him a household name in the industry.

Over the years, he has built a strong fan base for his relatable roles and impeccable timing on screen. His journey from a small-town stage actor to a widely celebrated film star highlights his resilience, passion, and unwavering belief in his craft.

Today, Okele is not just a nickname—it is a brand that symbolizes laughter, originality, and the enduring spirit of Yoruba theatre. His story serves as an inspiration to upcoming entertainers who aspire to make a name for themselves in the competitive world of Nollywood.
