Afrobeats superstar Davido has officially commissioned a new female hostel at Clifford University, Abia State, naming the facility after his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke. The Veronica Imade Adeleke Female Hostel was unveiled during the university’s 6th Convocation Ceremony, where Davido also addressed graduating students in a heartfelt commencement speech.
The singer, who has built a global reputation for his music, used the platform to inspire graduates to pursue lives of impact and purpose. He stressed that true greatness lies not in fame or wealth, but in the positive difference one makes in the lives of others.
“When I looked into their faces, I saw the same fire that built me — that hunger to be seen, to make something out of nothing, to turn pain into power,” Davido said.
He further elaborated on the value of aligning talent with purpose, explaining that while natural ability might open doors, it is meaningful action that gives life depth and significance.
“I told them that talent might open the door, but purpose gives it meaning,” he added, urging graduates to approach their careers and life goals with intentionality.
The newly commissioned hostel serves as a tribute to Davido’s late mother, who was an educationist and philanthropist devoted to the transformative power of learning and compassion. Dr. Veronica Adeleke’s commitment to uplifting young people through education and service is immortalized in the facility, which will provide safe and comfortable accommodation for female students at the university.
“My mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, was a teacher and giver who believed education and compassion could change lives. This building is a continuation of her purpose — turning love into legacy,” Davido said in a touching statement.
The convocation ceremony, held at the university’s sprawling campus, was attended by prominent guests, including Davido’s friend Cubana Chief Priest, who pledged to sponsor the school fees of 50 students as part of his contribution to education. The gesture highlighted a growing trend among Nigerian celebrities leveraging their influence to support academic development and youth empowerment initiatives.
Prof. Chimezie Omeonu, Vice Chancellor of Clifford University, commended Davido for his generous contributions, praising him for setting an example that goes beyond music. He noted that the singer’s investment in education and the youth underscores a commitment to shaping future generations and inspiring young Africans to pursue excellence.
The Veronica Imade Adeleke Female Hostel features modern amenities and accommodations designed to provide students with a conducive learning environment. The facility is expected to enhance the university’s capacity to host female students comfortably, promoting a safe and supportive space for academic and personal growth.
Davido’s involvement in the convocation ceremony and his investment in the hostel reflects a broader commitment to social responsibility and community development. By combining his influence with tangible initiatives, he continues to honor his late mother’s legacy while empowering students to dream bigger and pursue lives of purpose.
As graduating students celebrated their achievements, many expressed gratitude for the singer’s inspiring words and his commitment to education. The commissioning of the Veronica Imade Adeleke Female Hostel not only cements Davido’s status as a philanthropist but also as a role model for young Africans, demonstrating that true impact comes from using one’s resources to uplift others.
