Ronami Ogulu, sister to Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, has shed light on the driving force behind his preference for live performances over long studio sessions.

According to her, Burna Boy’s constant touring and deep connection with live audiences are not random career choices but rather the continuation of a family-rooted legacy built around live music, artistic authenticity, and performance excellence.

In a recent conversation, Ronami explained that Burna Boy’s creative process and work ethic are deeply influenced by their family’s philosophy towards music. She revealed that their mother and manager, Bose Ogulu—widely respected in the Nigerian entertainment industry—didn’t just create a professional management structure for her son, but built a lasting foundation that celebrates musicianship, stagecraft, and the raw essence of live artistry.

“My mum’s younger brother literally scouted everyone from his church,” Ronami shared, referring to the origins of Burna Boy’s first live band.

She explained that their uncle, fondly called Uncle Tee, played a pivotal role in assembling the first group of musicians who helped Burna Boy craft his distinctive live sound. According to her, this early setup marked the beginning of what has now become a globally recognized performance culture.

“All of that contributed to the intention of what started today. The goal has always been live music, not just studio recording,” she said.

Ronami emphasized that Burna Boy’s artistic journey was never about following the conventional pattern of studio-based artists who spend months locked away recording songs. Instead, his creative energy has always thrived in front of real audiences where he connects directly with his fans through sound, energy, and emotion.

She further explained that this philosophy often confuses some of Burna Boy’s followers and critics, who question why he spends so much of his time touring different continents rather than focusing on recording new albums.

“I think that’s why many people are always confused, asking, ‘Why are you always on tour? Why are you guys always on the road?’ The intention has never really been about going to a studio in LA and sitting there for months,” she clarified.

For Burna Boy, the stage is more than a performance space—it is a creative laboratory where his music comes alive in real time. His ability to perform with a live band and deliver high-energy sets has become one of his strongest trademarks, distinguishing him from many of his peers in the Afrobeats scene.

Ronami’s insight paints a clearer picture of how Burna Boy’s family values and early musical influences have shaped his approach to artistry. With his mother managing his career, his sister handling creative direction, and a family legacy steeped in live performance, Burna Boy’s success story is deeply intertwined with his roots.

From church-inspired beginnings to sold-out global tours, Burna Boy’s journey reflects a lifelong dedication to live music—one that continues to define his identity as one of Africa’s most dynamic and influential performers.
