Media personality and actress, Toke Makinwa, has opened up about the painful struggles she endured in her past marriage and how public scrutiny shaped her decision to walk away.

Speaking in a candid interview with media host Chude Jideonwo, the entrepreneur reflected on the misconceptions surrounding her resilience and how she found strength in choosing herself over societal expectations.

The media star, who has often been the subject of public debate, admitted that while many people saw her ability to move on as a sign that her challenges were not severe, the reality was quite different.

According to her, survivors are often misjudged because people assume that if someone did not “break” under pressure, then what they endured was not serious enough.

“People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die,” Toke said. “But if someone comes back ten times stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it.”

The actress further explained that the very public nature of her relationship was a major factor that influenced her decision to leave

. She acknowledged that had her marriage remained private, she might have been tempted to endure the situation longer. However, the weight of public opinion and the intensity of her emotions made it clear that staying would have endangered her well-being.

“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she confessed.

Makinwa revealed that her choice to leave was not an easy one, but it was the only path to preserving her life, sanity, and future. For her, walking away was not a sign of weakness but an act of courage that came after deep reflection and personal pain.

She noted that society often envies those who bounce back stronger after adversity, instead of drawing inspiration from their recovery journey. “It unsettles people when you rise again,” she said, pointing out that instead of admiration, many view resilience as a challenge to their own comfort.

The mother of one also stressed the importance of prioritising one’s health and peace of mind in any relationship, no matter how difficult the choice may seem. For her, self-preservation was the ultimate act of love—choosing her own life over being consumed by toxic circumstances.

Toke Makinwa’s revelations have once again stirred conversations around the pressures women face in marriages, especially when they are constantly in the public eye. Her story serves as a reminder that behind the glitz and glamour, many celebrities endure battles that the public never truly understands.

By speaking out, she hopes to shed light on the importance of empathy, resilience, and the courage to choose oneself, even when society judges otherwise.
