Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has signed a one-year contract with Scottish club Celtic as a free agent, with the option to extend for an additional year pending international clearance.
Celtic confirmed the 28-year-old’s arrival on their official website, following the mutual termination of his contract with Sevilla FC. The signing ensures Iheanacho’s inclusion ahead of Celtic’s Europa League registration deadline.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed confidence in Iheanacho’s abilities, saying, “I know Kelechi so well and what he can bring to the team.” He added, “I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team,” noting that he expects the Nigerian forward to settle in quickly and impress fans with his performances.
Iheanacho moves to Scotland after a brief stint in La Liga with Sevilla, which he joined last summer on a free transfer from Leicester City. The forward struggled for consistent playing time in Spain, appearing in 11 games across all competitions, scoring three goals, but went goalless in nine La Liga matches. During the January transfer window, he spent time on loan at English Championship side Middlesbrough, making 15 appearances, scoring once, and providing two assists.
The Nigerian international began his professional career at Manchester City, making his senior debut in 2015, before moving to Leicester City in 2017. Over six seasons at the King Power Stadium, he scored 35 goals in 173 appearances, lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield, and was named the club’s ‘Player of the Season’ despite their relegation battle.
Iheanacho has also been a key figure for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, earning over 60 caps since 2015. He has scored crucial goals in World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations, playing an important role in Nigeria reaching the 2023 AFCON final.
