Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has sparked conversations online after addressing the role of poor parental upbringing in shaping the lives and mindset of many Nigerians.

The self-acclaimed Akpako Master took to his X handle to highlight how the negative declarations and attitudes of some parents towards their children often leave lasting scars that follow them into adulthood.

According to Terry G, these early experiences are one of the major reasons why many Nigerians remain stuck in cycles of failure and low self-esteem.

He explained that the words children grow up hearing at home, especially discouraging or abusive ones, can significantly affect how they perceive themselves and their abilities later in life.

By internalizing these damaging voices, Terry G said, many young people unknowingly carry the same energy into adulthood, thereby limiting their progress and potential.

In his post, the singer wrote: “Our Nigerian parents really do many of us strong thing. The point I’m making is this: when you come under my post saying you’ll never make it, that’s not really you speaking, it’s the voice of what you grew up hearing at home.

When you say, ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that,’ you’re only repeating what your father and mother told you growing up. Now you see you’ve carried that same energy into adulthood, and that’s why many are stuck in failure. It’s time to break that cycle. It’s time to change that mindset.”

Terry G’s statement resonated with many Nigerians online, with several users agreeing that parental influence often plays a major role in determining the trajectory of a child’s future.

Others, however, argued that individuals also have the responsibility to rise above negative backgrounds and redefine their own paths.

The singer’s comments come at a time when conversations around mental health, self-esteem, and the power of positive parenting are gaining prominence in Nigeria.

Experts have consistently emphasized that parental words and actions leave deep imprints on children, influencing their confidence, choices, and long-term achievements.

By calling on Nigerians to “break the cycle” of negative upbringing, Terry G urged young people to embrace a positive mindset and reject limiting beliefs inherited from their childhood. His message, though simple, underscores the importance of self-awareness and mental resilience in overcoming life’s challenges.

This is not the first time Terry G has used his platform to share personal insights and social commentary beyond his music. While he remains a controversial figure in the Nigerian music industry, his candid remarks continue to spark debate on issues that many consider deeply personal yet socially significant.

As his post continues to trend, it is clear that the conversation has struck a chord with many who see themselves in his words. For Terry G, the path forward is about encouraging Nigerians to unlearn harmful lessons of the past, build confidence, and chart new directions that lead to success rather than failure.
