The Atasemanso Circuit Court in Kumasi, Ghana, has handed down a total of 96 years’ imprisonment to three Nigerian nationals — Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze — over multiple counts of car theft.

According to Police spokesperson Godwin Ahianyo, the suspects were arrested on June 20, 2025, and arraigned on July 22, 2025. He explained that during the first court sitting, Russell Ekenze pleaded guilty and was “immediately convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour.”

However, the two other suspects, Francis Friday and Linus Agwazie, initially pleaded not guilty. Their case was moved to Circuit Court 3 on July 23, 2025, where both men were found guilty. They each received eight years’ imprisonment on two counts, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

Ahianyo further disclosed that Circuit Court 1 also heard additional charges against all three defendants. “On the same day, Circuit Court 1 also heard additional charges against all three suspects, resulting in 20-year IHL sentences each, also on two counts, and to run concurrently,” he stated.

The legal proceedings did not end there. On July 24, 2025, Circuit Court 2 convicted Russell Ekenze again, sentencing him to an additional 10 years in hard labour on two counts. This sentence will run concurrently with his existing punishment.

Currently, all three convicts are serving their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison.

This development comes against a backdrop of rising concern in Ghana over the involvement of some Nigerian nationals in criminal activities. In May 2025, a Nigerian woman, Patience Gold, was convicted for human trafficking, while in July, 50 Nigerians were arrested for alleged cyber fraud and human trafficking offenses.

The case has sparked public debate, with many Ghanaians calling for tighter border control and stronger bilateral cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria to tackle transnational crimes.
