Gingerrr delivers a mix of action, drama, and comedy, starting in a way that leaves viewers puzzled about the movie’s genre. The first few minutes present a whirlwind of events, almost disjointed, before the pieces finally fall into place, pulling the audience into its gripping narrative.
Directed by Yemi Morafa, Gingerrr boasts an impressive cast: Bisola Aiyeola, Blossom Chukwujeku, Bolaji Ogunmola, Faithia Williams, KieKie, Lateef Adedimeji, Mr Macaroni, Odunlade Adekola, Ogogo, Shaffy Bello, Timini Egbuson, and Wumi Toriola.
Synopsis: A High-Stakes Heist with Twists
Four women, bound by fate and a shared vendetta, set out to change their lives through a daring heist. Desperate for freedom from their past, they unite to pull off the risky job. But as the plan unfolds, personal secrets and hidden agendas threaten to shatter their alliance, leaving betrayal and suspense at the heart of the story.
A Scene That Both Attracts and Irritates
One element that initially fascinated me later became a source of disappointment. In a pivotal scene, a recorded video shows Goldy (Ogogo)—a deceased drug dealer and gold merchant—reading his will. He reveals to his first wife, Remi Blaq (Shaffy Bello), that she unknowingly shared her husband with a second wife.
As expected, Remi reacts with anger. Goldy, in the video, predicts her response almost word-for-word, making it feel as if he were speaking to her in real time. While clever at first, the repetition of this tactic throughout the scene eventually dulled its impact.
The Standout Stars of Gingerrr
Bisola Aiyeola as Da Silva
The undisputed standout is Bisola Aiyeola, who portrays Da Silva with charisma and range. Two particular moments showcase her brilliance. First, her seamless delivery of an American accent is so authentic that it prompts you to wonder if she once lived in the United States. Just as you admire her versatility, she impresses again by switching to a fluent French accent—elegant and poised, almost like an aristocratic lady from the Victorian era.
Her performance in that French-accented scene, complemented by top-tier sound design and mood-setting direction, elevates her role to a memorable highlight of the film.
Odunlade Adekola as Ade Shine
Another noteworthy performance comes from Odunlade Adekola as Ade Shine, a feared underworld boss. Initially painted as a villain by hearsay, the film gradually reveals layers of his character, portraying a man driven by understandable motives. Though far from innocent, Ade Shine’s pursuit of the gold left behind by Goldy feels justifiable in a world where everyone else is after the same treasure.
Eye-Catching Costumes with a Few Flaws
The costume design deserves applause in certain areas. Bisola’s attire in the French-accent scene is stunning, enhancing her Victorian-inspired persona. Similarly, Timini Egbuson (Golden Boy) rocks his edgy, rock-star look, perfectly portraying a reckless, cocaine-addicted rich kid. Ade Shine’s constant Danshiki outfits suit his character as an Isale Eko street lord.
However, the costume department slips in a couple of areas. The contact lens worn by Blossom Chukwujeku (Abula) looked convincing from a distance but appeared artificial in close-ups. Meanwhile, Shaffy Bello’s consistently heavy makeup—something of a recurring theme in her roles—felt excessive for her character.
Locations, Lighting, and Cinematic Quality
Gingerrr impresses with its choice of locations, particularly the gritty Makoko setting and the intense rooftop scene featuring Ade Shine, Martell, and his girlfriend.
The lighting department deserves praise for enhancing indoor and nighttime scenes, while the color grading—though limited mostly to contrast and saturation adjustments—kept the visuals cohesive. The film’s balance of drama and well-timed comedy ensures that there’s hardly a dull moment.
Final Verdict: A Must-Watch with Minor Flaws
Despite a few missteps in costume and scene repetition, Gingerrr succeeds in delivering a compelling Nollywood heist story infused with action, drama, and hints of comedy.
