For some actors, their popularity and leadership skills have inspired them to pursue careers in politics, where they seek to serve their communities in governance and public administration.
Here are seven Nollywood personalities who have stepped into the political arena:
1. Kate Henshaw
In 2014, award-winning actress Kate Henshaw announced her ambition to represent the Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Although she did not secure the ticket during the party primaries, her bold move signaled Nollywood’s growing presence in Nigerian politics.
2. Funke Akindele
Beloved for her role in the hit comedy series Jenifa’s Diary, Funke Akindele made headlines in 2023 when she was unveiled as the deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos State. Despite losing in the polls, her candidacy reflected the evolving political involvement of Nollywood stars, especially women in leadership.
3. Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD)
Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo brought his charisma and administrative skills into politics when he served as Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism between 2009 and 2015 under the administration of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. His tenure highlighted the potential for creative minds to influence policy in arts and culture.
4. Bob-Manuel Udokwu
Known for his commanding presence on screen, Bob-Manuel Udokwu transitioned into politics in 2022 when he was appointed Special Adviser on Entertainment, Leisure, and Tourism by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo. His role reflects the importance of entertainment in boosting tourism and local development.
5. Kenneth Okonkwo
Popularly remembered for his groundbreaking role in Living in Bondage, Kenneth Okonkwo has taken an active role in national politics. During the 2023 presidential election, he became a prominent spokesperson for the Labour Party, lending his voice and popularity to the campaign.
6. Desmond Elliot
Actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot is one of Nollywood’s most notable political figures. First elected in 2015 into the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency 1, he secured re-election in 2019 and continues to serve as a lawmaker. His political journey has attracted both praise and criticism, showing the complex realities of stardom in governance.
7. Tony Muonagor (Tony One Week)
Musician and actor Tony Muonagor, widely known as Tony One Week, combined his creative career with politics when he was elected into the Anambra State House of Assembly in 2011 to represent Idemili North Constituency. His venture into politics further broadened the intersection between entertainment and governance.
