The family of Brazilian jazz maestro Hermeto Pascoal announced on Saturday that the legendary musician has died at the age of 89.
Recognized worldwide for his striking white beard and hair, Pascoal was fondly known as “The Sorcerer” because of his ability to make music not only with conventional instruments but also with objects from daily life.
In a heartfelt Instagram statement, his family said he passed away “with serenity and love,” surrounded by relatives and fellow performers. They added that, at the moment of his death, his band was on stage performing — “just as he would have wished: making sound and music.”
Pascoal, who was born in the state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil, built an international career through his collaborations with jazz legend Miles Davis and other leading artists. Davis even recorded some of Pascoal’s works, helping to establish him as one of the most innovative and influential figures in modern jazz.
A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist celebrated for his improvisational style, Pascoal left an indelible mark on the global music scene.
Paying homage, Brazilian star Caetano Veloso wrote on Instagram that Pascoal was “one of the highest points in the history of music in Brazil.”
