A Nigerian youth advocate and feminist leader, Oruche Ogeamara Precious, popularly known as Mama P, has reportedly been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City following an alleged attack by thugs.
The incident occurred at Benin Airport, Edo State, and sources allege that the attackers are loyal to Julius Abure, the former head of an unrecognized Labour Party (LP) faction.
The attack on Mama P reportedly happened just hours before her detention, sparking concern among civil society groups and political supporters across the country.
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, a Labour Party chieftain and spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, confirmed the detention via his X handle.
He revealed that the party’s legal director has been instructed to deploy lawyers immediately to secure Mama P’s release. Dr. Tanko called on Nigerians to intervene urgently, stating, “Mama P is being detained at the State CID in Benin. I have just spoken to our legal director to deploy lawyers for her rescue.
We want more people to come for her rescue lawyers and all concerned should please mount immediate action. We need everyone’s support for her now.”
Mama P, known for her outspoken criticism of political figures, has been a strong supporter of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Her activism has often placed her in the spotlight, advocating for youth engagement, transparency, and accountability in governance.
The alleged involvement of thugs connected to Julius Abure, who is reportedly now aligned politically with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has added to the tensions surrounding her detention.
Labour Party supporters and civil society organisations have expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as a politically motivated attempt to silence dissenting voices within the party and across Nigeria.
Many observers argue that targeting prominent activists like Mama P could have a chilling effect on civic participation and the advocacy of political reform.
The situation continues to develop as legal teams prepare to intervene and secure her release. Political analysts suggest that this incident highlights the ongoing challenges facing political activists in Nigeria, particularly those who are vocal in holding public officials accountable or challenging entrenched political interests.
As Nigerians await updates on her condition, the case has drawn national attention, with calls for transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.
Civil society groups are urging the Edo State government and police authorities to ensure that justice is served and that activists can carry out their work without fear of intimidation or violence.
Mama P’s detention underscores the risks faced by political activists in Nigeria, even those with strong public profiles, and has prompted renewed debates about political freedom, protection for human rights defenders, and the responsibility of state authorities to uphold the rule of law.
