Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Anto Lecky, has shared her struggles with stereotypes and misconceptions in professional spaces since her time on the reality TV show.
Speaking at a recent event, Anto explained that she often encounters assumptions that question her intelligence and capability simply because of her background on Big Brother.
According to her, many people still hold on to the belief that female reality TV contestants use the platform for the wrong reasons. She recalled how such biases have followed her into different settings.
Anto said, “You do not want to work for a company that does not allow you to prove yourself. So I’ll use myself as an example. Many of you might know me. I was on a reality show. However, many years ago, everyone had this idea that people who go on Big Brother, especially women, are going there to sell themselves, and I don’t mean sell themselves professionally, literally sell themselves.”
She added that such perceptions often show up in subtle ways, especially when people recognize her from the show. “So oftentimes when I go into rooms, people who might not, you know, might not know me. So I’m like, Oh, don’t you know how she’s Anto from Big Brother? And I really see that look in the person’s eye. I just want to do things for the back,” she explained.
Despite these challenges, Anto emphasized that the key to overcoming bias lies in focusing on personal development, skills, and education. She encouraged individuals not to be discouraged but to believe in their value.
“Someone out there is looking for the skills that you have. Don’t worry about the people who are not looking for you. There’s someone who is looking for you. So continue to, like we said, learn, unlearn, and relearn. There will be a day when someone will see your CV, and they’ll be rushing to you. That exists,” she noted.
Anto further advised that opportunities can appear unexpectedly, urging people to remain prepared and confident. She stressed that networking and joining communities are also important ways of opening doors, even when one has limited experience.
