Veteran Nigerian singer, Seyi Sodimu, has described Wande Coal as the most talented Afrobeats artist, crediting him with inspiring some of today’s biggest global music stars, including Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

In a recent interview with comedian Teju Babyface, Sodimu   famous for his hit Love Me Jeje  spoke passionately about Wande Coal’s impact on the Nigerian music industry, insisting that his contribution to the genre is unmatched.

According to him, Wande Coal played a pivotal role in transitioning Afrobeats into its current modern sound, introducing fresh rhythms, unique vocal styles, and a distinctive stage presence that set a new standard for upcoming artists.

“Wande Coal was one of the pivotal moments where he switched Afrobeats to the new generation, influencing people like Wizkid, Davido, and Sean Tizzle. It was Wande Coal’s style that took Afrobeats to the new sound. I think he is the most talented Nigerian Afrobeats artist,” Sodimu said.

The singer pointed to Wande Coal’s critically acclaimed debut album, Mushin 2 Mo’Hits, released in 2009, as a game-changer for Nigerian music.

The project, which featured hits like Bumper to Bumper and You Bad, blended rich melodies with lyrical dexterity and vocal agility, helping to shape the blueprint for modern Afrobeats.

Sodimu dismissed the idea that Wande Coal’s greatness should be measured by streaming numbers or online popularity, stressing that the respect he commands among fellow artists is proof of his influence.

“Any artist you ask even Burna Boy can attest to Wande Coal’s artistry. People love Wande Coal when they hear his music,” he explained.

“I’m older than Wande Coal, and I know he’s actually operating at about 30% of his potential and still killing it. Imagine if he was at 78%. Wande is a genius  he can sing, he writes, and he’s simply amazing.”

He further emphasized that Wande Coal’s artistry extends beyond his voice, highlighting his songwriting abilities and musical creativity. For Sodimu, Wande Coal is not just an Afrobeats star but a cultural influencer whose style and sound inspired a new wave of African music.

Since his breakout days with Mo’Hits Records, Wande Coal has remained a respected figure in the industry, collaborating with both Nigerian and international acts while continuing to release music that resonates with fans. Although he may not always dominate headlines or streaming charts, his legacy is deeply embedded in the DNA of Afrobeats.

For Sodimu, this legacy deserves far more recognition. “We live in a time when people often celebrate numbers over talent,” he noted. “But when you strip away the hype, only a few artists have the gift, skill, and passion that Wande Coal possesses.”

Wande Coal’s influence, according to Sodimu, is evident in the music and performances of today’s top Afrobeats stars. From vocal runs to stage energy, elements of his style can be traced in the works of Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and others  a testament to his lasting impact on the genre.
