Celebrated music video director Clarence Peters has declared Burna Boy as the leading figure in Nigeria’s music scene, crediting his consistent stage performances and strong professional backing for his rise to the top.
Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Peters explained that Burna Boy’s passion for live shows and his technical awareness have set him apart from his peers. He pointed out that the artist’s decision to work closely with skilled professionals has helped fine-tune his craft.
“The performances on stage, how you’re able to hold your brand. Look, Burna Boy is the biggest Nigerian artist, hands down, because Burna Boy loves being on stage, but also understands what he needs to be on stage. He’s become technically sound because he’s been garnished with people who are technically sound, because that’s important to him,” he said.
Peters also spoke about the wider entertainment industry, comparing music to film. He stressed that talent alone isn’t enough — charisma and star quality are what truly draw audiences in.
“There’s a difference between an amazing actor and a star. The truth is, if you’re looking for amazing performances, go to the theater, go to stage. That’s not what you’re supposed to see.”
“That’s not, I mean, you would get good performances, but the personality and the charisma of the actor — the star power of the actor — is what you go to the cinema to go see on your streaming services. So America has an issue with that. The almighty America has an issue with that too. There’s not a lot of stars. So Netflix is having it here and there because they’re not a lot of stars,” he added.
Peters’ commentary reinforces Burna Boy’s status as a global music powerhouse, admired not just for his hits but for his ability to command a stage like few others.
