The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a fierce rebuke over the humiliating treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson aboard an Ibom Air flight on 10 August 2025. In a strongly worded statement, the NBA called the lifetime flight ban imposed on her—by both Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria—a heavy-handed, unlawful, and unacceptable affront to the rule of law and **human dignity.
According to NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and General Secretary Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, Emmanson was forcibly removed from the aircraft, publicly stripped of her clothing, and subjected to degrading humiliation—all while the ordeal was filmed and shared online. The association described the incident as “deeply disturbing,” underscoring that such conduct flagrantly violates her right to privacy and dignity.
Adding context, second-hand footage that surfaced online reportedly captures an Ibom Air hostess blocking Emmanson from exiting the plane—raising concerns that the airline’s actions may have amounted to false imprisonment and provoked a public escalation. The NBA emphasized that disparate video evidence places even more urgency on the necessity for an independent and impartial investigation by the appropriate authorities rather than unilateral punitive measures.
The NBA criticized the lifetime ban as unjust and procedurally flawed, pointing out that Emmanson was never granted a fair hearing before the severe sanction was imposed. It emphasized that neither Ibom Air nor AON had the mandate to enforce such a ban; rather, this power lies with Nigeria’s statutory regulators. The one-sided decision, they argued, tramples on the fundamental principle of fair hearing and is both legally and morally indefensible.
Moreover, the NBA decried the unauthorized recording and dissemination of indecent footage as a criminal violation and an egregious invasion of privacy. Even if documenting the incident was deemed necessary, the NBA insisted that the videos should have been blurred or appropriately edited to avoid exposing Emmanson’s nudity. They urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible, noting that such violations not only harm individuals but also erode public trust.
In addition to these demands, the NBA called on Ibom Air to immediately withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology to Ms. Emmanson, and fully cooperate with a fair investigation. The association further urged involvement from the Minister for Aviation, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and relevant security agencies to ensure thorough sanctions for those responsible and adherence to humane aviation standards.
As a mark of solidarity, the NBA pledged to provide pro bono legal support to Emmanson, affirming its readiness to fight for her rights and help secure redress. As the association concluded, it “will not remain silent while the fundamental rights of any Nigerian are trampled upon.”
