Veteran Nollywood actor and director, Segun Remi, widely known by his stage name Chief Kanran, has reportedly passed away. The news of his death broke on Friday morning, August 15, 2025.
Filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi announced the sad development via his Instagram page, sparking an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues in the Nigerian film industry. As of the time of filing this report, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Chief Kanran began his journey into theatre arts at an early age, participating in stage dramas during Easter and Christmas celebrations. He later pursued formal training at the Centre for Cultural Studies—now the Department of Creative Arts—at the University of Lagos. He furthered his studies at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a diploma in directing, acting, and film production.
Following his education, he hosted a television programme on MTV in Lagos before fully transitioning into filmmaking. Known for his recurring portrayal of wealthy men in movies, Kanran began acting professionally in 1975. That same year, he played the lead role in Kurunmi, a stage play written by the late Professor Ola Rotimi.
His early screen appearances included roles in episodes of the television series Mirror in the Sun, marking his transition from stage to screen. He also portrayed a businessman in the popular soap opera Images. His major career breakthrough came on stage when he featured in Langbodo, Nigeria’s official drama entry for FESTAC ’77, performed at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
On October 1, 1988, Kanran gained widespread recognition for his role as Alaafin Kanran in a drama aired on Lagos Television, further cementing his place as a household name in Nigerian entertainment.
