Ado‑Ekiti, Nigeria — August 2025 — In a shocking and emotionally fraught incident, 34‑year‑old Deborah Ayeni was arrested for allegedly abducting a one‑day‑old baby from Okeyinmi Health Centre in Ado‑Ekiti. Ayeni confessed that her motive was to conceal a miscarriage from her fiancé, who resides in the United Kingdom .
According to police reports, Deborah visited the health centre posing as a pregnant woman—wrapping clothes around her belly to simulate pregnancy. She ingratiated herself with the newborn’s parents by striking up a conversation in Hausa and offering to help care for the baby so the family would feel comfortable entrusting the child to her care .
Around 4–5 a.m. on Monday, while the baby’s father had stepped away (likely for prayers) and with no nurse in immediate sight, she quietly took the infant and fled the hospital .
An alarm was raised, and an urgent investigation was launched. Ayeni inadvertently left behind a polythene bag containing baby items and a supermarket receipt, which became critical evidence. Authorities traced the receipt back to a local supermarket, obtained surveillance footage, and identified Ayeni’s location via a credible tip-off. She was subsequently arrested at her home in Afao‑Ekiti, and the baby was rescued safe and unharmed .
At the police briefing, Deborah admitted she had miscarried in March 2025 but did not disclose the loss to her fiancé—fearing he might abandon her if he learned the truth. To preserve her relationship and continue receiving financial or emotional support, she felt compelled to present a facade of pregnancy—ultimately culminating in this desperate and unlawful act .
Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo commended the quick, tactful response by law enforcement, noting the importance of public vigilance and cooperation in such cases. He urged citizens to report unusual behavior in their communities to aid in preventing similar incidents .
This incident highlights how societal pressures—including expectations around pregnancy and the fear of abandonment—can drive individuals to extreme decisions. It also underscores the need for robust maternity ward security, emotional support for women experiencing pregnancy loss, and increased awareness around mental health and reproductive challenges.
