Nigerian writer and social commentator Solomon Buchi has weighed in on television host and actress Toke Makinwa’s pregnancy at 40, cautioning against framing her decision as a divine arrangement.
In a post shared on Instagram on Saturday, Buchi congratulated Makinwa, noting that motherhood seems to be something she had long desired. However, he expressed concern about the way she tied her decision to God.
“I was watching a clip from her podcast and she was talking about how she had an agreement with God or she prayed to God that she really wants to be a mother,” Buchi said.
He stressed that Christians need to be mindful of how they interpret personal decisions in relation to faith.
“As a Jesus girl, a Christian, we need to be very careful with how we mix God with our personal decisions. Decisions that we’ve decided to pursue, whether they are godly or not,” he explained.
While pointing out that there is nothing wrong with the desire to have a child, Buchi argued that attaching spiritual justification to choices made outside marriage is unnecessary.
“Honestly, you can give your testimony without implicating God’s word and his standard. Just say that you really wanted to be a mother and now you’re about to be a mother or maybe you’re a mother already. There is no need to infuse God,” he said.
Buchi concluded by reaffirming his happiness for Makinwa while advising against presenting such choices as being divinely led.
“Some people have made mistakes and that is absolutely fine. That does not define their life, but sounding as though you intentionally planned to have a child outside of wedlock and then trying to spiritualize it and bring God into it… let’s not bring God into it,” he added.
