Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has once again set social media abuzz after declaring that single mothers cannot successfully raise a boy into a “proper man” without the influence of a male figure.
The actor made the remarks during an interview on Okay 101.7 FM, Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, August 17, 2025, where he strongly argued that boys require the presence of a father figure or trusted male mentor to grow into responsible men.
According to him, “A woman can’t raise a man. You can’t, you’re not built for it. A single mother cannot raise a man properly. You need a male influence – go get your brother that’s doing well or your father or even any man that you trust. There has to be a male presence in it raising a boy child.”
Iyke, who is known for his unfiltered opinions, stressed that the nurturing ability of women, while valuable, is not sufficient to shape boys into strong men.
He maintained that nurturing without discipline risks producing weak men who may repeat the same mistakes as absent fathers.
“Because women are naturally built to nurture, to love. And then what you’re going to raise is a very weak man? He is going to be everything like the men that left you.
You need somebody that would discipline him, tell him ‘No’ as often times as possible, and put him in the grind,” he explained.
His remarks have since generated heated conversations online. Critics accused him of undermining the sacrifices and successes of countless single mothers who have raised accomplished men despite the absence of fathers.
Many pointed out that resilience, discipline, and moral guidance are not exclusive to male figures, but qualities any parent can instill.
On the other hand, supporters of Iyke’s viewpoint argued that children, particularly boys, thrive best when exposed to balanced parental roles. They emphasized that fatherhood provides a distinct kind of influence that complements a mother’s nurturing nature.
This is not the first time Jim Iyke has courted controversy with his views. The 48-year-old actor has in the past described “modern feminism” as a societal problem and once claimed that “food is a scam,” insisting that humans were designed to eat just once daily.
Each of these statements attracted widespread backlash and debates, reinforcing his reputation as one of Nollywood’s most outspoken personalities.
While many disagree with his recent stance, his comments have brought renewed attention to the long-standing debate about single parenthood and the role of fathers in raising children.
For some, it is a reminder of the societal pressure single mothers often face, while for others, it underscores the need for strong male role models in shaping young boys.
As reactions continue to pour in, Jim Iyke remains unapologetic about his position, insisting that his words were not to discredit single mothers but to emphasize the importance of male guidance in raising boys into men.
