During her university years, Ini Edo recalls falling deeply in love with a charming prince from Ikwerre, Rivers State. Naïve about romance and relationships at the time, she devoted herself entirely to him, often spending long hours at his lodge cooking and cleaning as a devoted girlfriend.
Despite her dedication, she frequently noticed him spending time with a particular girl on campus. Whenever Ini questioned him, he would reassure her, saying, “She’s just a friend, a reading partner, since we’re in the same department.”
Ini didn’t feel threatened. “She wasn’t even his type,” she explains. “She was slim, tall, and flat-chested. Meanwhile, I had the curves and hips he always said he loved. According to him, I was his perfect kind of woman.”
This went on for months, until the heartbreaking day she saw him in a wedding car with the inscription ‘Just Wedded’—and the bride was the very girl he had called a friend.
Reflecting on the experience, Ini says it left a lasting impact. “That incident broke me for years. I’ve moved on now, but I’m still very careful with the sons of Adam. When a man tells me, ‘I love you,’ I simply ask — is it my heart you want, or my back?”
